Overheated wax and stearin can ignite, just like cooking fat. Always melt over a low heat and watch continuously. Use a double saucepan and control temperature by means of a proper thermometer or use a thermostatically controlled wax pot. Water should not be allowed into the molten wax; apart from the hazardous spitting this can cause, water will result in fracture of the finished candle. Should wax ignite, smother flames with a damp cloth or the pan lid, NEVER use water.
